Dressember
This year, a group of strong, generous women and I are joining forces as team “Freedom Frockers” as part of Dressember - a movement aimed at helping survivors of sex trafficking. All by wearing a dress every day for the month of December.
About Dressember
Why a Dress? We are committing to wearing a dress or tie every day in December to raise awareness about modern slavery. We believe #YouCanDoAnythingInADress, including raise millions of dollars to support the fight to end slavery.
Please join us in solidarity for Dressember by making a donation!
About the Problem
Slavery exists in every city around the world. It haunts massage parlors and truck stops. It circles most major sporting events. And it may exist right next door to you. Sex trafficking stats via Polaris Project:
Since 2007, the National Human Trafficking Hotline, operated by Polaris, has received reports of 34,700 sex trafficking cases inside the United States.
In 2017, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children estimated that 1 in 7 endangered runaways reported to them were likely sex trafficking victims.
Globally, the International Labor Organization estimates that there are 4.8 million people trapped in forced sexual exploitation globally.
On a Local Note
In Houston, where I live, we have a notorious reputation as a hub for sex trafficking.
“Houston is a major hub of human trafficking. It is almost guaranteed that you drive by places where human trafficking occurs every day. One of the biggest forms of trafficking in Houston is sex-trafficking where women and children are forced to sell their bodies to men. Houston is a hub for many reasons – we are close to international borders and ports and we have an international airport, which means it is fairly accessible for international victims. We are also a very international city, which allows international victims and traffickers to blend in. In addition, I-10 is a major corridor for trafficked victims and it runs straight through the center of our city. Trafficking also increases with large events like sporting events, conferences, rodeos, etc, which Houston has many of.” via www.A2ndCup.com
